Rewarding Images New Trends in Digital Camera Incentives By William Flanagan
s any good incentive planner knows, the effectiveness of a merchandise reward is increased by its ability to create memories. The stronger that ability, the better the reward. That's essentially the secret behind the impressive performance of digital cameras as premium incentive products.
Digital cameras have two advantages in delivering memorable rewards. One comes when the employee or winner earns the camera through hard work and determination. That person will remember that the camera represents the fruits of their labor every time he or she uses it.
The other type of memory is more valuable. This one is made up of the images the person shoots with that camera—family, friends and destinations—and can last a lifetime. Five years after the shot, they will look at that picture and remember three things: the subjects, the circumstances and the camera they used (and, subsequently, how they got that camera). That is real incentive power.
Terry Markwart, director and assistant general manager of Special Accounts Sales for Canon, agrees.
"Digital cameras allow the end user to be interactive," he explained. "Most people using a digital camera are capturing a key moment in their life and the lives of their friends and colleagues. What better way to have people saying positive things about your company? When they ask, 'Where did you get that camera?' your employee says, 'My company gave it to me.' They say, 'Wow, you work for a really great company.' Consider this an investment in your business and watch it work for you."
Ever-Evolving
Like incentive programs themselves, digital cameras come in a variety of designs that can suit different types of end users and needs. This fact gives the planner a large measure of freedom to customize the selection based on award winners. Or, if they can't predict the types of winners or their knowledge of cameras, they can select models based on a wide variety of features, including style, price and functionality.
"There are really three types of cameras," said Jimmy Beyer, national sales manager for Sony Premium Incentive Sales. Between the three types, there is a camera that reaches every type of recipient.
"All hit different groups of people," Beyer said. "The compact are something you can slip into your pocket and take pictures on the go. The high zoom are for people who might want to capture pictures of their kids taking part in sporting events. They're also great for nature photography. The digital SLRs are really taking the place of traditional SLRs for the enthusiast photo takers—people who want to use interchangeable lenses and so on. If you want to hit everybody in your program, you want to offer each of these types."
There also are cameras to meet every incentive budget. "For less than $200, you can get a high pixel count and 4X zoom," Beyer said. "Most incentive programs, especially annual programs, have a budget that can include around $200. The high zooms and digital SLRs take you to a higher level, but they're also very motivating."
"Most consumers understand now that you need more than just megapixels to make great photographs," said Heather Chevreau, sales and marketing manager for Fuji. "Eight to 12 megapixels is more than enough to make 4-by-6-inch or even poster-size images. However, to make sure the images are beautiful, users need updated technology such as face detection and intelligent flash."
Budget models offer solid functionality at an attractive price point. Most budget models are very powerful and often include high-end features such as image stabilization and in-camera red-eye reduction. Many can also shoot images at 8 megapixel resolution, which in the not-too-distant past was the resolution of the pros. At this resolution users can print large images without losing any clarity.
"Eight megapixels is the new entry level for digital cameras," said Canon's Markwart. "This is where the focus will be in 2008. Of course, there are units out there with less and more pixels, but 8 megapixels will be where the majority of them will be found."
Ultra-compact models are also very powerful, but extremely small and easy to carry. They often feature a high level of style that appeals to the fashionable user.
Digital SLRs will attract a savvy shooter with a high degree of camera knowledge. In the past, these cameras were prohibitively expensive, but now they can be found at relatively affordable price points from name-brand vendors.
Quality Brand=Quality Program
Speaking of brands, here's a point that can't be overstated: Brand recognition is extremely important when selecting products for your program. And when it comes to camera selection, there are a lot of top-quality brands to choose from, so there's no reason to skimp.
"Cameras are in everyone's budget," said Markwart, a veteran voice in the incentive market. "Don't be afraid to spend a little extra in this area. It will pay off in end. You will be amazed what people will do for a brand-name, quality camera," he added.
Digital cameras and photography products are available in the incentive market from Canon, Fuji, Nikon, Olympus and Sony in a large variety of choices at reasonable price points. There's little reason not to include them in your program. Simply put, the quality of your program will be reflected in the quality of the products you choose.
"It is the perception that is important in this business," Markwart noted. "Even if people see you with this camera and don't know you, they get a certain perception of 'Wow! He or she has a really cool digital camera.' Brand-name products have a high perceived value, and that is what people want. Brand-name manufacturers spend millions to create this excitement and demand for these products. We all know the brands we want. The key is how we get them. Sales performance, years of service and many other opportunities can be reasons to offer digital cameras in your programs. If you haven't used digital cameras in your program, give it a try. You will see the difference."
Colorful Trends
The use of color is, by far, the most astonishing trend for 2008. Canon, Nikon and Sony are all offering cameras in colors never seen before. Award-winners with a sense of style will be able to outfit themselves with a camera as an accessory guaranteed to stand out in a crowd.
Canon for instance is offering its PowerShot SD110 in Bohemian Brown, Pink Melody, Rhythm and Blue, Golden Tone and Swing Silver. Sony offers its new W-Series cameras in pink, blue, champagne gold and red. Nikon also has a color palette all its own. The Coolpix S550 and S210 are available in Plum, Cool Blue and Graphite Black.
"Style, speed and color matched with the Nikon design is where we're taking our cameras in 2008," said Tom Myers, national sales manager for Nikon
Images Made Easy
As camera technology has evolved, manufacturers have subtly taken the onus off the person holding the camera to take a great picture and put it on—or should we say in—the camera.
"There will be lots of new features that will make it easier to get better images," Markwart said. "The cameras are getting smarter and can correct things in the camera that we used to have to correct on the computer. The end user gets better images without doing anything."
Every manufacturer offers some level of proprietary technology designed to make it easier to take great pictures. For instance, the Nikon S600 features an Active Child Mode. Using this feature, the shooter can select and frame a subject prior to shooting. If the subject moves, the camera will track and focus on the moving subject as you shoot.
"When the subject is in the viewfinder, the camera recognizes and memorizes that person. When that person leaves or moves and comes back, the camera will continue to track that person," said Nikon's Myers. "The technology has really improved. What we have done is try to include incredible features and make the cameras easy to use and added a lot of flair to them with the size, the design, the LCDs and the colors," he added.
Any parent who has ever tried to take a picture of an uncooperative child will appreciate the latest development in error-free shooting: Smile Mode. Found on the Nikon Coolpix S550, this great feature automatically fires the shutter when the subject smiles. There's also a Blink mode which displays a warning message when the subject has blinked.
"This is very new for us," Myers said. "Basically if you're not smiling, it's not going to take a picture and the gauge comes up if your subject blinks. It warns you to take the picture again."
Sony also offers models with what it calls a Smile shutter mode as well as improved face detection technology, which, like the smile shutter technology, can distinguish between the faces of children and adults.
Sony also is placing an emphasis on high definition output, which Beyer sees as a trend for 2008, along with higher megapixel counts. "People now have bought high-definition televisions to watch high-definition content, whether it's TV content, Web content, camcorder-based content and so on," he said. "People also are now looking to view their photos from their camera in high definition on their high-definition television, and that's a big focus for Sony in 2008."
Always Be Motivating
Overall digital cameras have an edge shared by all great incentive products. They grow with the user as they become more sophisticated and savvy. The camera that satisfies them today will not have enough features for them the next time they earn a reward. So today's novice shooter is tomorrow's budding pro.
"Digital still cameras have gone from one per household to everyone in the household having one," Beyer said. "Mom, dad and the kids all have their own digital still cameras, so even though there may be one or two in the house, there's room for more, and there's also room for upgrades. Everyone wants one that's newer, better—one that does more, whether that's face detection or in-camera editing. All these things weren't available a couple of years ago, and it's a motivating factor for people to upgrade from what they have now to something newer."
That is why planners need to have a comprehensive selection of cameras and brands to satisfy every award winner.
