Spring Is in the Air

The Northeast may be getting ready for its nor'easter, and it might be snowing in Southern California, but hereabouts, spring is in the air. And that's got me thinking about motivation.

As soon as there's a sunny day above 45 degrees, I can't wait to get on my bicycle, to put on my gardening gloves, to go outside and work, and play. If only there were a way to hold on to that feeling of excitement all the way through to October. If only there were a way to keep that motivation—to stay revved up.

But that's not how motivation works. The initial excitement will wear off, and by August, when the garden is full of nuisance (mosquitoes and weeds, mostly), I'll have to find other ways to talk myself into getting out there and doing the work.

It's all about rewards, really. The initial reward is just being able to cure the cabin fever and get out of the house. But after a while, you have to up your game. By midsummer, it takes two kinds of rewards to keep me in the garden, doing the work: short-term and long-term. The short-term reward for a day in the garden is an adult beverage on the front porch (sometimes followed by an accidental nap in the sun). The long-term reward is all the tasty tomatoes, peppers, greens, beans, carrots, beets, potatoes and so on that I can bring to the table. There's nothing like homegrown.
